This holiday season, if you’re looking for a quick and easy cookie to share with your loved ones, try a spritz cookie! You can take the spritz cookie in the classic route with a butter-vanilla flavor, or you can spice it up like I did! I made a warm, ginger-spiced spritz cookie to add to our cookie collection this year. My sister-in-laws got me one of these lovely Wilton spritz cookie makers for a Christmas gift last year and I love it. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and my favorite baking day… the day we bake our Croatian Christmas cookies! Some years our annual baking day includes my mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and I while my grandpa “supervises” back in Michigan; but for the past two years, mom and I have baked together here in Chicago.
You may have read in my “About Me” section that this is a very important tradition on my Mom’s side of the family, and this is very near and dear to my heart. It’s been a week since I got back from my lovely long girls weekend with my Mom and Aunt Michele in Frankfort, MI, and boy did we have a wonderful time – I can’t wait to do it all again next year!!!
One of the things we did on the first day was visit North Star Organics cherry farm nearby. This farm is so charming and beautiful and they were actually featured in a beautiful spread in Martha Stewart Living which was neat to see! They had both sweet and sour cherries, so we decided to do some fresh picking of red and white sweet cherries – these cherries are seriously so good and fresh. Not only did they have super yummy fresh cherries, but they have awesome dried cherries too that I decided I wanted to bake in a classic chocolate chip cookie. I’m on a crumble kick right now! I put this recipe together not quite knowing how successful it would be, but I must say it’s pretty darn good and combines some of my favorite flavors and textures. Yesterday was quite the baking adventure filled with blunders, however I had some furry friends keeping me company and making me smile!

Happy Sunday! It’s starting to warm up a bit here in Chicago so I’m looking forward to getting outside a bit more today. Spring is just around the corner and I can’t wait to enjoy it with some new outdoor projects around the house, planting herbs and flowers, and playing outside with Zoey.
