The newest addition to our Croatian Christmas Cookies for 2018 is Breskvice, also known as Peach Cookies! When my Great Grandmother, Grandma, Mom and I get together to bake our cookies each year, we have our our staples that we stick to. However, for the past few years, Mom and I have been exploring new recipes together to add to the mix, and this year it’s Breskvice! Continue reading “Breskvice (Peach Cookies)”
I may have said it before, but I’ll say it again – not a fan of sugar cookies! However I learned I am most certainly a fan of Chocolate Cinnamon Sugar Cookies :). These cookies remind me of the brownies I make, but in sugar cookie form and I love it!
Mom’s in town for our annual Mother/Daughter Christmas weekend in Chicago where we do Christmas-y things, enjoy our annual Holiday High Tea at the Drake Hotel, and bake the rest of our Croatian Christmas Cookies. This year my excitement got the best of me thinking of Mom being here and all the friends we’ll be spending time with this weekend, so I got started early on a fun new recipe to share with them! Almond crescent cookies are another staple in our Croatian Christmas cookie baking day! These pretty little snowy crescent moons are another sweet treat that are prefect for a morning cup of coffee or post-dinner espresso. Speaking of espresso, in the afternoons, we often enjoyed Bosnian coffee (or Turkish coffee) together and these cookies are a perfect hint of sweet to the strong coffee flavor. Fun fact… this is also the same type of coffee that’s used in fortune telling. When the cup is finished, the left over grounds at the bottom form patterns called tasseomancy that is interpreted. Kifle cookies are so darn good. We make two different kinds every year during our annual Croatian Cookie baking day. One is from a secret recipe that’s filled with a plum or apricot jam – these are SO good when you eat them fresh from the oven. The jam is warm and the dough is flaky and oh so tasty. The second kifle recipe we make is filled with a walnut mixture and rolled in powdered sugar. These sweet little treats goes perfect with a cup of coffee. This holiday season, if you’re looking for a quick and easy cookie to share with your loved ones, try a spritz cookie! You can take the spritz cookie in the classic route with a butter-vanilla flavor, or you can spice it up like I did! I made a warm, ginger-spiced spritz cookie to add to our cookie collection this year. My sister-in-laws got me one of these lovely Wilton spritz cookie makers for a Christmas gift last year and I love it. There’s something so fun and satisfying about pressing out these perfectly beautiful stamped cookies! 🙂 This recipe was modified from the Wilton cookie recipe book that comes with the spritz cookie tool. This year post Croatian Christmas Cooking baking day, I’m probably the most excited about this cookie, Madarica! If you haven’t read my previous post yet, give it a quick read for insight into this lovely family tradition and what it has in store for this year!
Madarica was a new Croatian cookie that I have never tried before, so it was a new baking adventure for mom and I. In Croatian, this translates to “Hungarian Lady” as the recipe was brought over from a Hungary Lady and therefore the name stuck. They are also called “Hungarian Squares” Continue reading “Madarica (Hungarian Layered Squares)”
