Over the Holiday weekend, mom, Grandma (or “Baka” in Croatian) and I got together to start baking our Croatian Christmas Cookies! My Baka was telling me about a cake recipe that she wanted to try with me that she got from our Teta (Aunt) Milka. Baka mentioned that Teta Milka often bakes this recipe for Christmas, and once she mentioned it’s made with 12 eggs, I was like “WHAT?!, I’m intrigued”. The next day after we finished our first round of cookie baking, we started baking this cake together. It’s not often that I get the opportunity to bake something new with my Grandma, and I really, really enjoyed this time together learning something new from her. Gingerbread Cake with Chocolate Ganache Filling and Caramel Cream Cheese Buttercream
2018 marks the earliest that we’ve put up our Christmas decorations. For the past couple years, we’ve stayed in Chicago for Thanksgiving, however most years we travel back to Michigan both for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Every year I’m always wishing the season was longer and that I have more time to enjoy our festive home. Finally this year I said to myself… “Katrina, why don’t you just start decorating earlier then?”. As if that was the most life-changing question I could have every asked myself LOL. I thought to myself “DUH”, why is that even a question? The Thanksgiving decor still stays up and is just further enhanced by Christmas decor and all is swell. Gingerbread Cookies
Trick or Treat! The Gingerbread Cookie just got a little spooky by becoming Mummies and Skeletons thanks to some fun Halloween decorating ideas! This is a classic Gingerbread recipe interpreted by Martha Stewart and decorated with a fun twist just in time for the Halloween season. Now I don’t have kids, but I sure did have a blast decorating these and I think it’s safe to assume that kids would enjoy this as well! Continue reading “Gingerbread Cookies”
Croatian Apple Cake
Last weekend, I took a trip to the suburbs of Chicago to visit a pumpkin patch which is one of my all time favorite fall activities! This particular pumpkin patch had a lovely little shop with all the fall grocery items – donuts, pies, ciders, breads, all the squashes, APPLES and more. I came home with pecan pie, cinnamon-apple donuts, cider, squash and a bushel of apples.
Typically when I think of using apples in a Croatian dessert, it’s for my grandmothers apple strudel recipe which is to die for and is a bit different from traditional strudel. Continue reading “Croatian Apple Cake”
Butter Cookies
We’re heading into prime cookie-decorating season! In the past I’ve posted recipes for Pumpkin Spice Cookies and Shortbread Cookies, but next up is Butter Cookies. Butter Cookies are melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. They are so buttery, but slightly salty. They have a soft crunch, but melt in your mouth. They are so amazing that I love having them naked – without any frosting. However sugar-lovers alike will love this cookie more with a double-dose of sugar by decorating with Royal Icing and Buttercream! Continue reading “Butter Cookies”
Fall-Spiced Muffins with Vanilla Glaze
YAY, it’s my favorite season! Happy Fall Y’all! Here in Chicago the leaves are slowly starting to change colors and fall off the trees, the temperature is dropping, and the grey skies are setting in with rain. Just in time for spooky season! 😉
Not only do I love fall weather, but I adore the flavors that come along with fall – both for savory food and sweet treats. It’s time for squashes, chillies, pastas, stews, soups, fall-spices, pies, rich cakes and more. However, I will admit I’m not as obsessed with “pumpkin-everything” as most lovers of fall are, and [CONFESSION] I’ve never had a Pumpkin-Spiced Latte.
