We’re heading into prime cookie-decorating season! In the past I’ve posted recipes for Pumpkin Spice Cookies and Shortbread Cookies, but next up is Butter Cookies. Butter Cookies are melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness. They are so buttery, but slightly salty. They have a soft crunch, but melt in your mouth. They are so amazing that I love having them naked – without any frosting. However sugar-lovers alike will love this cookie more with a double-dose of sugar by decorating with Royal Icing and Buttercream! Continue reading “Butter Cookies”
Almond crescent cookies are another staple in our Croatian Christmas cookie baking day! These pretty little snowy crescent moons are another sweet treat that are prefect for a morning cup of coffee or post-dinner espresso. Speaking of espresso, in the afternoons, we often enjoyed Bosnian coffee (or Turkish coffee) together and these cookies are a perfect hint of sweet to the strong coffee flavor. Fun fact… this is also the same type of coffee that’s used in fortune telling. When the cup is finished, the left over grounds at the bottom form patterns called tasseomancy that is interpreted. Kifle cookies are so darn good. We make two different kinds every year during our annual Croatian Cookie baking day. One is from a secret recipe that’s filled with a plum or apricot jam – these are SO good when you eat them fresh from the oven. The jam is warm and the dough is flaky and oh so tasty. The second kifle recipe we make is filled with a walnut mixture and rolled in powdered sugar. These sweet little treats goes perfect with a cup of coffee. This holiday season, if you’re looking for a quick and easy cookie to share with your loved ones, try a spritz cookie! You can take the spritz cookie in the classic route with a butter-vanilla flavor, or you can spice it up like I did! I made a warm, ginger-spiced spritz cookie to add to our cookie collection this year. My sister-in-laws got me one of these lovely Wilton spritz cookie makers for a Christmas gift last year and I love it. There’s something so fun and satisfying about pressing out these perfectly beautiful stamped cookies! 🙂 This recipe was modified from the Wilton cookie recipe book that comes with the spritz cookie tool. This year post Croatian Christmas Cooking baking day, I’m probably the most excited about this cookie, Madarica! If you haven’t read my previous post yet, give it a quick read for insight into this lovely family tradition and what it has in store for this year!
Madarica was a new Croatian cookie that I have never tried before, so it was a new baking adventure for mom and I. In Croatian, this translates to “Hungarian Lady” as the recipe was brought over from a Hungary Lady and therefore the name stuck. They are also called “Hungarian Squares” Continue reading “Madjarica (Hungarian Layered Squares)”
It’s been a week since I got back from my lovely long girls weekend with my Mom and Aunt Michele in Frankfort, MI, and boy did we have a wonderful time – I can’t wait to do it all again next year!!!
One of the things we did on the first day was visit North Star Organics cherry farm nearby. This farm is so charming and beautiful and they were actually featured in a beautiful spread in Martha Stewart Living which was neat to see! They had both sweet and sour cherries, so we decided to do some fresh picking of red and white sweet cherries – these cherries are seriously so good and fresh. Not only did they have super yummy fresh cherries, but they have awesome dried cherries too that I decided I wanted to bake in a classic chocolate chip cookie.
