Over the Holiday weekend, mom, Grandma (or “Baka” in Croatian) and I got together to start baking our Croatian Christmas Cookies! My Baka was telling me about a cake recipe that she wanted to try with me that she got from our Teta (Aunt) Milka. Baka mentioned that Teta Milka often bakes this recipe for Christmas, and once she mentioned it’s made with 12 eggs, I was like “WHAT?!, I’m intrigued”. The next day after we finished our first round of cookie baking, we started baking this cake together. It’s not often that I get the opportunity to bake something new with my Grandma, and I really, really enjoyed this time together learning something new from her. 2018 marks the earliest that we’ve put up our Christmas decorations. For the past couple years, we’ve stayed in Chicago for Thanksgiving, however most years we travel back to Michigan both for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Every year I’m always wishing the season was longer and that I have more time to enjoy our festive home. Finally this year I said to myself… “Katrina, why don’t you just start decorating earlier then?”. As if that was the most life-changing question I could have every asked myself LOL. I thought to myself “DUH”, why is that even a question? The Thanksgiving decor still stays up and is just further enhanced by Christmas decor and all is swell. Happy GAL & VALentines Day! ❤
If you’ve been following Baking with Soul for a while, you know that this blog was born out of my love of baking for others; what better day to celebrate that then Valentine’s Day?! In recent Valentine’s Day passed, I’ve made treats to share with not just my husband, but friends, family and co-workers! This year, I’m just spoiling my husband with a delicious chocolate dessert for two which will pair wonderfully with his love of red wine. BUT, this recipe can easily be doubled to share with all of the ones you love. Continue reading “Dark Chocolate Cake with Fresh Raspberry Buttercream”
I’m back in the kitchen just in time for my favorite season of baking… FALL<3! You may have wondered where I’ve been?! Well, in early August I travelled to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica to become a certified Yoga Instructor, and I just returned a few days ago. It was an absolutely incredible journey that forever transformed my life in ways that I cannot describe. I expanded my soul family, learned so much about myself and Yoga, got to be submerged in a beautiful surrounding, and was nourished daily with comforting food AND fabulous desserts! Happy 4th of July week! We love the 4th of July festivities; except when the dog panic ensues over the fireworks of course :(. I grew up boating with my family every 4th of July and each year I couldn’t wait for the fun it would bring. We would grab some friends and fireworks, anchor our boat to Sugar Island in Lake Erie, then BBQ and camp out for long weekends. Since Aaron and I got together, I’ve joined in on his tradition of a long weekend in Frankfort with friends and family filled with bonfires and a trip down the Platte river on a kayak. I’m grateful for new and old traditions that create lasting memories and I’m looking forward to this years adventures. ❤ Continue reading “Raspberry Crumb Cake”
Hoppy Easter! What a beautiful weekend in Chicago, I hope it’s as lovely as it is here where you are!
It’s been just over a year since we’ve moved into our home-sweet-home in Chicago… just in time for Easter. Last year during Easter, my dad and his wife came to spend the holiday with us and they’ve come back to join us again this year with their two new puppies! Typically during the Holidays we’re off to visit our families in Michigan, so I’m grateful for new traditions in our own home. We will have a house full of family, friends and fur babies to share Easter dinner and dessert with. Continue reading “Classic Carrot Cake”
